The BIG Swim 2012
2012 heralds the biggest overhaul of swimming provision in Hambleton for six years.
The District Council launched its 'BIG Swim campaign on January 1 - to encourage people to get back in the water in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Supported by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), North Yorkshire Sport and British Olympian and Commonwealth Games 50m breaststroke gold medallist, Chris Cook, the initiative will see a year long celebration of swimming.
Thirsk & Sowerby Leisure Centre now has a new look swim timetable with new and updated activities. (see link at top of page)
We now have a 'Family Swim' ticket offering a discounted rate of just £10 for a family of four, designed to encourage parents and children to swim together. We also now have a weekly 2012 swim session, Monday 2.00-3.30pm, where anyone can take to the water for just £2.12 until the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games.
In Feburary we will be hoisting a "BIG Swim 2012 Challenge" to raise money for 'Help fo Heroes'. Participants will have the choice of taking on one of three challenges;
20 days to swim 12km, 20 days to swim 12 Lengths/day (6km) or 20 days to swim 1200m (1.2km)
More details on the challenge will be available in centre and on the website soon.

NEW HOIST TO IMPROVE ACCESS
A new £7,000 hoist has been installed at Thirsk and Sowerby Leisure Centre - giving full disabled access to the pools.
Its design means that not only can it help people into the main pool and showers, it can also be used at the teaching pool - giving disabled children access to this pool for the first time.
The hoist has been installed after consultation with customers who raised concerns about the current hoist - and the difficulties experienced by wheelchair users.
The new hoist means we can give full access to people of all ages and all abilities.
Swimming is recognised as one of the best forms of therapy for people with disabilities -from the sensation of floating in water for the most severely disabled to actually learning to swim for the more able. The movement of the body in the water gives a person with disabilities a sense of freedom, and for those with limited movement it can be used as an effective physiotherapy session. Combine the health benefits and fun factor, and you can appreciate why swimming helps raise confidence and self-esteem for anybody with a disability.
The new hoist also improves access to the main pool - the detachable seat and wheels makes it easier for wheelchair users as they can transfer straight into the shower without having to use their own chair.
