What's new at Thirsk & Sowerby Leisure Centre
Memberships boom as Zest Health & Fitness Gym celebrates it 1st Birthday
As the 26 station gym at Thirsk & Sowerby Leisure Centre, which was built as part of the £600,000 re-development of the old facility, approaches its first birthday memberships go from strength to strength.
The Zest Health & Fitness Gym first opened its doors to members in August 2009 since when the Centre has seen a total increase in its membership base by a staggering 15% smashing its target of a 10% increase in year one. As well as the increase in membership base the centre has also seen an increase in Gym usage which is up by 25%, meaning not only are there more members but also that members are now visiting the gym much more frequently than ever before and therefore improving their overall health and wellbeing.
Centre Manager Neil Hellawell said "It is great to see so many people, of all different ages accessing our facilities which results in improving the health of the community. It is amazing to see that one year on both the building and the equipment still look brand new".
In line with the success of the new gym at Thirsk & Sowerby Leisure Centre the centre has also had a great response to its first ever Group Fitness Timetable which was launched in January this year. Since the it's launch over 4000 participants have taken part in one of the group fitness classes ranging from Pilates and Boot Camp to Aquafit and Dance Mats. A copy of the Group Fitness Timetable and a list of all the classes available at Thirsk & Sowerby Leisure Centre, as well as information on Memberships, can be accessed through the menu bar at the right hand side of this page.
Swim Kidz Trial Restructure
After completion of the recent post use research and following feedback from the ASA level 2 course that is currently running at the centre, Thirsk & Sowerby Leisure is trialling a re-structure of their Swim kidz lessons. The re-structure will see all Stage 4 classes moved out of the Teaching pool and into the shallow end of the main pool. As well as moving the Stage 4 classes there will also be a trial of teaching Stages 4 - 7 in widths rather than in lanes. The reason for trialling widths for a term is to encourage stroke improvement, which is one of the priorities of the current syllabus. This development will also allow better use of the pool space available and offer a wider range of classes.
James Howard, Swimming Coordinator said "Moving Stage 4 into the main pool will hopefully allow us to reduce class sizes in the teaching pool and will improve the confidence of the Stage 4 children in preparation for Stage 5 where they learn a range of different stokes. This will also produce a greater definition between Stages 3 and 4 which are currently quite a similar syllabus".
Stages 8 and above however will continue to be taught in lengths.
